I first met David Hurwitz when he came into my shop,
like dozens of other writer/artist wanna-be's, with
his self published book WASTING THE DAWN (WTD). At
the time I didn't really think much about the encounter,
I can't even tell you the day or the month it happened
but I was somewhat impressed with the quality of his
hand bound chap book about VAMPIRES, I agreed to take
10 copies but only on consignment.
WTD isn't a comic but it dealt with
some of the same content as comics I carried, it did
have some neat graphic art and I was also beginning
a little Vampire jones as one of the leads in my favorite
comic, DC/VERTIGO'S "PREACHER",
an Irish vampire
named
Cassidy, was being written out of the story line.
It only took half of a page for me
to see WTD wasn't a prissy little Anne Rice imitation
and by the end of page two I was hooked. I'm talking,
getting annoyed at paying customers for taking me
away from the book, HOOKED! I think that the most
interesting aspect of the story is that it is about
PEOPLE who just hapen to be Vampires. I sold all 10
issues in a couple of days and the rest is, as they
say, history. Starting with my re-order of Book One,
WTD was no longer a consignment book and by Book Three,
WTD was a top 5 seller at COMICKAZE, sometimes outselling
fan favorite books like X-MEN and SPAWN and yes, PREACHER.
The response of the hundreds who
bought those handmade books over the life of the series,
particularly those who left San Diego but would call
frantically, asking if the new volume had been released,
convinced me that this story was indeed something
special.
A few years later I wrote my first
publisherd work, THE END and promotion of the book
led me to a Small Press Convention in L.A., where
I met a fantastic illustrator, Breed. Like everyone
else, Breed was immediately taken with WASTING
THE DAWN, and it quickly became apparent
that, he was one of the missing pieces that I needed
to bring this project to the world at large.
The final piece was a publisher.
I could have self-published this book but sometimes
you have to sacrifice pride and admit that you're
just not the best choice for a job. Enter Ted
Adam's of IDW Publishing.
IDW has earned much acclaim for their
work, most notably in the Horror realm, with books
like the the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT
vampire series by Steve Niles and
(WTD cover Artist) Ben Templesmith.
After 30 DAYS was optioned
by Sam Raimi, people coldn't get
enough of their work, so I was extremely pleased and
honored when Ted agreed to publish WASTING
THE DAWN.
Enjoy!
